WHEN YOU EAT COULD BE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU EAT FOR PREVENTION OF DISEASE

Posted 26-06-2019

'It is now becoming clear that circadian disruption is increasing the incidence and severity of many diseases'

The time of day that you eat could be just as important to your wellbeing as the food you consume, a new study has found.

According to the researchers who conducted the study, this could have particularly serious implications for those who suffer from jet lag after travelling abroad, and for workers who regularly do inconsistent shifts.

The study's findings, which were published in medical journal Cell and funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC), identify insulin as the primary signal which helps your body clock recognise when it's an appropriate time to eat.

The scientists outline how the release of ...

Are There Health Downsides To Vegetarian Diets?

Posted 17-07-2020

It's becoming more popular to eat meat-free at least part of the time.

While about 4% of Americans are full-time vegetarians, with about half of those also vegan, a recent poll by the Vegetarian Resource Group found that 46% of respondents say they always or sometimes eat vegetarian meals when dining out. The top reason? Health.

Although vegetarian eating does have a stellar health reputation, recent news has focused on what could be bad about vegetarian diets and more stringent vegan plans, including reports of stroke risk, harms to brain health, hair loss, and depression.

So, are there downsides to these supposedly healthy eating patterns?

"For generally healthy people, I don't see any reason that eating a vegetarian diet is risky to health," says ...

School lunches keep Japan's kids topping nutrition lists

Posted 17-07-2020

(JapanToday) - Japan manages a rare feat for a developed country when it comes to feeding its children -- high scores for nutrition but very low obesity rates. One major key? School lunches.

A landmark report by the U.N.'s children agency UNICEF released Tuesday shows Japan topping the charts for childhood health indicators, with low rates of infant mortality and few underweight children.

But it also manages the lowest incidence of childhood obesity among the 41 developed countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and European Union.

Experts say there are various factors at work, including a health-conscious society and regularly mandated check-ups for children, but a nationwide school lunch program also plays a key role.

"School lunches with menus that are ...

Research reveals that you're still the same person after a drink

Posted 17-07-2020

Many of us know that feeling of waking up, headache in tow, struggling to remember what we said and did after that extra drink the night before. And then suddenly, the memories vividly resurface.

Alcohol disinhibits us, making us say and do things that we’d otherwise keep under wraps. People will often drink to gain “Dutch courage” in a demanding situation. Many of us can understand the appeal of having a drink before a blind date or a social event – it can help to calm our nerves and cultivate confidence. That’s because alcohol has a depressant effect which makes us feel more relaxed.

Of course, alcohol’s effects aren’t all positive. We’ve all adopted nicknames for the characters that we become after ...

Irish agencies repeat don’t wash raw chicken message

Posted 30-06-2020

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has used the backdrop of World Food Safety Day to remind people never to wash raw chicken.

FSAI and  Safe Food, a group that promotes awareness and knowledge of food safety and nutrition on the island of Ireland, said washing raw chicken can spread food poisoning bacteria up to an arm’s length from the sink, which could cause people to get sick.

Campylobacter is a bacteria found in raw chicken. It is the most common cause of bacterial food poisoning in Ireland. In 2018, there were more than 3,000 notified cases in the Republic of Ireland, an increase of more than 8 percent from 2017.

The second World Food Safety Day on June 7 is led ...

A man had seizures after eating hot pot. Turns out he had tapeworms in his brain

Posted 31-07-2020

(CNN)A 46-year-old construction worker in China suffering from seizures turned out to have tapeworms in his brain -- suspected to be the result of eating undercooked meat.

About a month ago, Zhu (a pseudonym for the patient), from Luzhou, in eastern Zhejiang province, bought pork and mutton to cook in a spicy hot pot broth, according to a report published last week by the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University.

A few days later, he began to feel dizzy, and suffered headaches during the day, the report said. During the night, while he was sleeping, Zhu would experience seizure-like symptoms, similar to epilepsy.

Zhu's coworkers found him during such a seizure, and quickly sent him to a nearby hospital, where a CT scan showed ...

Why we need fibre — and how we can get more of it

Posted 31-07-2020

It’s estimated that most Canadians only consume about half the amount of recommended daily fibre

Fibre is known to be an important part of a nutritious diet, yet most of us are notoriously bad at getting enough of it. It’s estimated that most Canadians only consume about half the amount of recommended daily fibre. But why is it an important part of our diet?

WHAT IS FIBRE?

Fibre is a carbohydrate found exclusively in plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and legumes. The nutrient exists in two different forms: soluble and insoluble, and most foods have a combination of both. The former dissolves in water to become a gel-like paste and is found in oats, peas, beans and citrus fruits, to name ...

Head and neck injuries due to cellphone use are rising, according to study

Posted 31-07-2020

A recent study has found an increase in cellphone injuries, including facial cuts, bruises and fractures. The study, published early Dec 2019, found a spike in U.S. emergency room treatment for these mostly minor injuries.

The research was led by a facial plastic surgeon whose patients include a woman who broke her nose when she dropped her phone on her face. Dr. Boris Paskhover, of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, said his experience treating patients with cellphone injuries prompted him to look into the problem.

Paskhover and others analyzed 20 years of emergency room data and found an increase in cellphone injuries starting after 2006, around the time when the first smartphones were introduced.

Some injuries were caused by phones themselves, including people getting hit ...

What you should know about the nutrition in this simple dish

Rice and beans, a classic comfort food combo in Latino and Caribbean communities and some parts of the American South, is one of the healthiest dishes you can eat. It's rich in plant protein—12 grams per cup—and it provides nutrients that most Americans don’t get enough of.

Top among them is fiber. One cup of white rice and beans has 10 grams of fiber, mostly supplied by the beans. Compare that with a cup of chicken and rice, which has less than 1 gram.
